Opposition MPs Hold Sit-Down Protest at EOCO

On Thursday, May 29, 2025, the Minority in Parliament staged a sit-down protest at the forecourt of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters in Accra to express their opposition to the detention of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The protest came in the wake of the Minority’s earlier boycott of parliamentary proceedings, citing what they described as harsh and insensitive bail conditions imposed on the detained chairman.

Chairman Wontumi was taken into custody by EOCO on Tuesday, May 27, after appearing at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for questioning. He has since been held at EOCO’s head office in Accra.

Though bail was later granted at GH¢50 million with two justified sureties, Wontumi remained in custody, unable to meet the terms.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin stated that the Minority Caucus will continue to boycott parliamentary sessions until EOCO reviews the bail terms and ensures the release of Chairman Wontumi.
